QUESTION
Sports Clubs and direct
marketing: Am I allowed to use the members database to send direct marketing?
Things like emails, sms, text, phone calls.
ANSWER
Simple answer: NO
More detail: If you have
people’s consent for direct marketing then YES you can. But if the data was gathered
for one purpose (eg membership) you cannot use it for another purpose (eg marketing)
without their agreement.
This is why it is important to think-ahead about what you
intend to do with people’s data before you ask for agreement. If people agree
for you to contact them using emails, sms, text, phone calls then it is OK.
There are a lot of rules about cold calling and spam
emailing which are intended to protect the public (You and Me). There is also some
great guidance on marketing and fund raising.
